Philosophy of Taekwondo Spirit
General Taekwondo Philosophy
The Korean martial art of Taekwondo has evolved over the course of centuries, but the basic tenets and ideals have remained consistent throughout its history. The basic tenets of Taekwondo are:
1. Courtesy
Courteousness demonstrates discipline and respect to all we come into contact with. Polite manners help to honor our instructors, elders and seniors. Even strangers can feel special by the acts of courtesy we offer them. Courtesy also encourages a sense of justice. By physical and mental training, courtesy becomes a second nature, becoming a positive attribute that shines forth for all to see.
2. Integrity
When the Taekwondo student is firmly established in the practice of truthfulness, then s/he flowers into the full potential of her/his being. Wholehearted honesty results in power and freedom; we create the reality we desire. Everyone around us can trust in our words and deeds when we are filled with integrity. It is better than credit at the bank.
3. Perseverance
Get up after you fall, even if it is repeatedly. Perseverance is necessary to accomplish any great feat. No one ever won an Olympic medal sitting around making excuses. It is often by sheer effort alone that we succeed at our dreams. So keep at it and practice, practice, practice.
4. Self Control
When the senses of the body control us, we ride in a carriage drawn by horses without reins, going in every direction recklessly. Discipline is the master who reigns in the horses of desire. Concentration and focus fine tune performance so that the body and mind act together as one for the good of the human organism. Self-control leads to self-respect. It often requires more strength to control the self than any opponent. This is a key step to Taekwondo mastery.
5. Indomitable Spirit
Courage in the face of adversity. Without courageous men and women, this country would long ago have been conquered. The Taekwondo student must learn to face injustice without hesitation or fear, just as our military members do for the preservation of our freedom. Pursue your goals with indomitable spirit, and you are sure to reach them.
