What is Taekwondo?

TAE KWON DO is the art and science of discovering your inner strength for the purpose of defending against attack. In fact, developing the body and mind creates a sense of confidence that permeates the individual and demonstrates to would be assailants that perhaps the game isn't worth the candle (in other words, the effort isn't worth the results). It is also now an international sport, where competitors vie for medals, honor and glory. The main feature of Tae Kwon Do is that it is a native Korean fighting art emphasizing the use of one's bare hands and feet to repel an opponent. It has been independently developed over about 20 centuries in Korea.

In eras past, peoples living simple lives lacked physical strength and agility, and their bodies became weakened and decrepit with age. Conquering forces sometimes took advantage of this situation and successfully invaded and displaced these peoples. As the fighting arts spread through the countryside, formerly timid folks would find the spirit and will to defend what was theirs. Taekwondo has always been defensive in nature.

For a Tae Kwon Do practitioner, his or her entire body is a weapon. And the use of the body becomes instinctual after training in the practice. Responding to attacks by blocking and counter moves is a natural defense mechanism in the practitioner who has trained long and hard. Also, a remarkable "bond" exists between Taekwondo practitioners. It is an Esprit de Corps that cannot be denied.

Self-confidence can make people generous in their attitudes. Martial artists can stand equally against any opponent, but moral code forbids unfair assaults or the unnecessary use of force. The practice of Tae Kwon Do also gives an individual the mental attitude of modesty. The virtues of modesty and generosity are fundamentally based on self-confidence.

Healthy bodies and minds make people active and powerful. Such attributes are beneficial to individuals, families, neighbors, and their nation. You can acquire these benefits by practicing Taekwondo.
